The following is a philosophical vision statement written by the late
Dr. Herbert Holt, MD, Psychiatrist, Existentialist, Philosopher, Mentor,
Theologian, and founder of The Westchester Institute for Training in
Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy:
We are all prisoners of our
unexamined images of reality and we
fail to appreciate that our models
of reality often are of our own
making, based on our own socio-economic
cultural frame of
reference. To help us free
ourselves from our images and labels
requires the help of psychoanalytic
thinking, based on phenomenological
philosophy. To develop people to
become aware of their uniqueness and
separateness as human beings in
their world, becomes the goal of
existential psychoanalytic therapy.
